Lion Feuchtwanger, Who is He?

Courage locked fingers ‘round my throat
sang of surrender war demands.
She shook me and with words charged,
“Wake up your social conscience.”

Her life hinged on her choices today;
in our stories, self made structures,
we’re actors, on and off stage.
We proffer tomorrow a chance for change,
and we’ve the power lives to shape.

History writes its future
with fingers that choose to act.
That’s the spine of Mother Courage,
craft and cornerstone of Bertolt Brecht.

A mentor of his chose to act,
and he urged Brecht’s future sway.
This torchbearer, artist and Jew,
was one of hundreds whose influence
Varian Fry helped get through.
